You Don't Know What You Don't Know
As those of you who follow Sun Love Sailing know, our second main tenet, after "Safety First," is built on the idea that "You don't know what you don't know." It's a core belief of mine that these days it's all too easy to underestimate how important experience is, and the path to gaining it.
So how do you find out what it is you don't know? It starts with understanding that there's probably a lot more to the picture than you realize right now. That's the first step to opening the door to the rest of the process. I always say, "There's no substitute for 20 years of experience."
Why We PROUDLY Affiliated With NauticEd
That's why we've affiliated with NauticEd. Their approach to teaching and certifying sailors is also grounded in the premise that "You don't know what you don't know," and they want to help you find out what that is. They've built a comprehensive learning, certification, licensing, and resume-building program for sailors and powerboaters that I believe in and fully support. We confidently put our name behind their process and their reputation.
Sailing Takes More Than Inspiration
To be a good, safe, smart sailor, there's an endless list of skills, gear, and experience you need to acquire. Gaining that knowledge, and the skills to sail safely and with confidence, requires openness and dedication to the art. Inspiration may come from watching YouTube videos, but the experience and skills need to be learned.
Being a competent sailor is something born from desire, but built through experience and through learning from experienced sailors. So where's the best place to start?
That's where NauticEd comes in.
A Structured Path to Real Competence
NauticEd is built around the American National Standards for boating education. They lay out the full breadth of knowledge you need, in a clear, structured progression, so the blind spots don't become problems later.
NauticEd uses modern, multimedia, online training to build real competence, with a clear pathway to hands-on instruction and assessment alongside professional instructors.
You're Not Just EARNING a CERTIFICATE
You're building the skills and judgment, in real-life scenarios, to skipper a sailing yacht with confidence. Learn the right things, in the right order, take the guesswork out of the process, and become a qualified, competent sailor.
